Join Rice’s  Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum for a celebration of Arbor Day!

Love trees? So does Rice! We love trees so much that we have decided to celebrate Arbor Day 2019 for an entire week! Join us between October 25th to November 1st for a variety of events in appreciation of our campus trees and everything that they do to support us!

 

Friday, Oct 25th @ 6:00-8:30PM; Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Houston, Screech Owl Release event, Rice’s Moody Center for the Arts

The Houston SPCA’s Wildlife Center of Texas is thrilled to be collaborating with the Moody Center for the Arts to return a group of rescued and rehabilitated screech owls back to campus!  SPCA staff will discuss owls and their rehabilitation, as well as have a chance to meet several owl ambassadors. Refreshments will be provided, and attendees will get to learn more about the SPCA’s new Young Professionals program. This event is free; however, registration is required. Monday, Oct 28th @ 5:30-7:30PM; Arbor Day Celebration Kick-off and Social, Graduate student commons outside Valhalla:

On Monday we will host our official Arbor Day Celebration kickoff with a social and guest speaker, Micky Merritt, who will be talking about the Texas A&M Forest Service’s urban initiative, “Healthy Trees, Healthy Lives.”

Tuesday, Oct 29th @ 7:30 -8:30AM; Campus bird walk with Dr. Cin-Ty Lee, Field 6 (across from Weiss College)

Walk the campus with Professor Cin-Ty Lee, Chair of Rice’s Earth Science Department and birder extraordinaire! Rice’s campus is a popular stop-over point for many neotropical migratory birds, with more than 200 species documented on campus. Join Cin-Ty to help spot these  guests along with our favorite local resident species. Attendees will meet in field 6, across from Weiss College, near the  Harris Gully Natural Area. Bring binoculars (if you have them) and wear comfortable shoes to walk in.

Tuesday, Oct 29th @ 3-6PM; Rice Grounds team tree mulch giveaway, Rice’s Farmers Market

The Rice grounds team will be giving away free mulch made from on-campus materials at the Rice University’s Farmers Market. This is a great way to add organic matter to your garden while also promoting the recycling of green materials.

Wednesday, Oct 30th @ 12-1PM; Lunch & Learn with Rice’s Arboretum & Grounds, McNair Hall multipurpose Room 1

Rice’s grounds team will meet Lunch & Learn participants to talk about the Lynn R. Lowery Arboretum and to give a short tour of the nearby trees. Participants will meet in the McNair Hall multipurpose room 1 and can bring their lunch.

Wednesday, Oct 30th @ 12-1PM; “Meet an owl” education event with the Houston Audubon, Herring 129

Join the Houston Audubon’s education team to learn about owls and other birds of prey that depend on Houston trees for their survival. The Audubon’s owl ambassadors will be in attendance, so this will be a great opportunity to meet an actual Rice owl! The event will be held in Herring 129  from 12-1PM.

Thursday, Oct 31st @ 12-1PM; “Meet an arborist” with the Rice Ground’s team, RMC lobby

Come by the RMC lobby and and learn more about our campus trees from Rice’s grounds team.  An endangered Houston toad, a savanna species, will also be on hand for a meet and greet!

 

Friday, Nov 1st @ 11AM – 2PM; Arbor Day planting events across campus!

Friday is the big day: Arbor Day! Join one of the ceremonial tree planting opportunities taking place around campus.

11AM, Academic Quad: 2 cedar elms will be planted

12PM, Grad Student Commons, 1 live oak will be planted

2PM, North Lot by Jones College:  3 loblolly pines will be planted

2PM, Wiess College:  2 Monterrey oaks will be planted
