Alice Staub Liddell Garden

Alice Staub Liddell Garden

Named in 2005 in memory of Alice York Staub Liddell ’49, this garden was one of the first, major Arboretum projects. This garden is found outside the Huff House, previously referred to the O’Conner house, which was designed by Mrs. Liddell’s father-in-law, John Staub, and served as the residence for the university presidents and is now the home to Rice’s Alumni Association. Mrs. Lidell previously served as the president of the Garden Club of Houston and the garden features palms from her personal collection.

The centerpiece of the Liddell Garden is a one-of-a-kind birdbath designed by Rice architecture student, Sarah Simpson ’09. The garden can be accessed down the stone pathway behind the “Alice’s Garden” gate, which is accessible off the North Campus entrance road.
