The Johnson Owl Deck at Harris Gully was dedicated on April 27, 2023. The deck will serve as an outdoor classroom and wildlife observation pavilion to better connect the Rice and Houston community with the natural world. The project was developed in Associate Professor Jesús Vassallo's wood seminar at Rice Architecture by a team formed by Rice alums Pouya Khadem and Lene Sollie in collaboration with structural engineer Tracy Huynh. The Deck is built out of cross-laminated timber and exemplifies sustainable, construction methods.
